There are a lot of scams going on and around the holiday season even more so. Consumers are receiving phone calls from “third party” loan companies claiming to be collecting on past due payments taken out by a family member. And these debt collectors throw in all the normal illegal practices they do so well such as telling you that your driver’s license will be suspended, you will be arrested, a constable will be sent to your home, etc.

I went through a similar thing but it was with a major bank, Citibank. They sent the IRS a 1099 that basically said they paid me income for a certain year. The IRS told me that I had to pay “X” more in taxes because of it.
The problem, though, I have never had an account with Citibank or ever been employed by them. I wrote Citi two letters and they did not respond. It took months of dealing with the IRS. I even visited their offices three times to finally get resolution. It was stressful and completely unfounded!
How do they get away with this kind of stuff?
